Why students choose Kelowna
Kelowna is the largest city in BC’s Okanagan Valley, about a 4–5 hour drive east of Vancouver. It’s home to UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College. Students get a UBC degree option with lower living costs than Metro Vancouver, plus lakes, hiking and skiing nearby.
The climate is different from the coast: hot, dry summers and colder, snowier winters than Vancouver or Victoria. Budget for a proper winter coat and boots.
Rent
Median asking rents in Kelowna in October 2026:
| Home | Median rent per month |
|---|---|
| Studio | $1,500 |
| 1 bedroom | $1,799 |
| 2 bedrooms | $2,325 |
Rents have eased over the past year — the overall median was down about 7% year over year. Shared rooms near UBC Okanagan are typically the cheapest option; budget roughly $800–$1,100.
Transit
UBC Okanagan students pay for a U-PASS — $71 per semester from September 2026 (about $18 a month), which covers Kelowna’s BC Transit buses. Okanagan College students should check their own pass options. Many students eventually buy a car or bike because buses are less frequent than in Vancouver.
A realistic monthly budget

| BC health fee (once on MSP) | $75 |
| Phone | $40 |
| Personal, social and other | $230 |
| Total | about $1,880 |
That’s roughly $22,600 a year before tuition. Try the cost calculator for your own choices.
Good to know
- Kelowna International Airport (YLW) connects to Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto; most international arrivals connect through YVR.
- Part-time jobs are more seasonal than in Vancouver — summer tourism is busy, winter is quieter. Read the work rules for students.
