The process at a glance

  1. Get accepted by a BC school and receive your PAL if you need one.
  2. Prepare proof of funds — $23,448 for living costs plus first-year tuition and travel.
  3. Have Vietnamese documents translated by a certified translator.
  4. Book your upfront medical exam with an IRCC-approved panel physician.
  5. Apply online, then give biometrics at a VFS Global centre in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City when IRCC asks.

Translations

Transcripts, diplomas, birth certificates, household documents and bank letters that aren’t in English or French need a certified translation, the translator’s declaration and a copy of the original. Use an officially recognized translation service — not machine translation.

Medical exam

Vietnam is on IRCC’s list of countries requiring an immigration medical exam for stays longer than six months. Book with an IRCC-approved panel physician.

After the Student Direct Stream

Many Vietnamese students used the SDS, which ended in November 2024. Applications now go through the regular process, so focus on:

  • a clear, specific study plan
  • funding documents with a traceable history — sudden large deposits should be explained
  • a student GIC, which is optional but makes living-cost funds easy to verify

Choosing a school

Many Vietnamese students start at a college such as Langara and transfer to a university, which lowers first-year costs. If you plan to work in Canada after graduating, check the PGWP rules for your program before you enrol.
